Is Beowulf being foolhardy or noble in deciding to fight alone? What are the consequnces of the king dies?

If you are going to be an epic hero, you have to do epic things. He was pretty effective fighting Grendel and his mother alone. If Beowulf wants his praises sung for eternity, he needs to battle the dragon by himself.
