Who waited for Beowulf at the shore of the lake even though it seemed certain that Grendel's mother had killed him, and why did it appear that Beowulf would not return?

The Great and Dane warriors are waiting. When Beowulf cuts off Grendel's head, THere is a heave in the water and blood can be seen. THey bow their heads thinking Beowulf is dead.
