Why did Beowulf decide to free the Danes from Grendel?
Besides Beowulf's father's connection to Hrothgar's realm, he is looking to make a name for himself. Beowulf is seen as a great warrior and hero, he goes to the Danes in order to prove his worth and defeat the monster if it is fated he do so.
