Why does Beowulf not kill Grendel's mother with Hrunting, the sword?

Beowulf is unable to pierce Grendel's mother's skin with the sword, thus, he makes use of a huge weapon hanging on the wall of the cave. This giant sword cut through her neck, killing her instantly.
