Why is bewulf's death a turning point for the Geats

Though it isn't dramatized in the poem itself, the Geats believe that with Beowulf's death, old feuds will be reignited (particularly with the Swedes) and the Geats will possibly be wiped out in wars. It is as though Beowulf's strength and reputation was protecting them from a war that they think is sure to come now.
