One major theme in Beowulf is loyalty. The sections "The Spoils" and "The Farewell" illustrate this theme through Beowulf's sacrifice of his own life in order to protect his people, as well as Wiglaf's loyalty to his King. Though terrified, he chose to accompany and assist Beowulf, regardless that he was the only one willing to join him.
