in the Aeneid an interesting statement is given by the sibyl in response to the request by Palinurus for them to help him cross over the dreaded Styx. the Sybil answered him "cease to think that destiny can be changed by prayers"! it is clear that the ancient Greeks and Romans believed in the irreversibility of fate and the imminence of an event protracted as destiny. This belief should not be taken in vain but emphasis should be given cementing the notion of the helplessness of prayer pertaining to destiny! We thus pray to be led in our way or to appease mercy and forgiveness. This topic brings about a heated argument -try to consider the issue of freedom vs determinism. Do humans posses freewill or everything is caused and so our decisions are? Thing on these things!
