Black Boy is written in retrospect, from the viewpoint of grown and matured Richard Wright. The style of Wright's first-person narratives brings two important factors into the story. The first is that the reader is allowed into the insights of the author on his own childhood. The author affords himself a sense of duality, entering the headspace of his different worlds throughout the story. This gives us emotional and situational viewpoints of Richard at different stages of his life.
