Richard was very young when his father abandoned the family. They didn't have the best of relationships. His father was abusive and violent when he wasn't neglectful. Richard turned to increasingly disturbed behavior in order to gain attention, even bad attention was better than being ignored, as evidenced in Richard's strangulation of the cat.
