Wright's purpose seems to be a desire to expose the neighborhood and conditions Richard must overcome for school to be beneficial. He's frightened and wants to fit in; he gravitates toward the older boys and picks up on all the wrong things. This scene denotes a measure of innocence and vulnerability the author wants us as readers to understand.
