In Chapter 9, page 191.
Richard is referring to his inability to fight the white establishment..... the neverending harrassment by the white workers who do not want him there. He believes that it doens't matter what he says, or whether or not Mr. Crane stands by him..... all that matters is the fact that he feels defeated, and he is afraid.
