What happens when Richard goes to buy groceries and what is his mother's response?

One evening mother tells Richard that he must do the grocery shopping for the household, giving him a list and some money. When he goes past the corner, a gang of boys grabs him, snatch his basket, and take the money. His mother gives him more money, which is again stolen by the same boys. When Richard returns, his mother hand him more money and a large stick, kicking him out of the house until he learns to fight back. Richard blindly beats the gang of boys using the stick as a weapon, finally bringing the groceries home.
