Why did his father become a grim and hostile?

The family's move to Memphis makes Richard's father becomes alienated, hostile, and violent. Father has no prospects and he i a raging alcoholic. He refuses to support his family, he eats most of their food, and probably hates himself. He leaves the family pretty soon after they move to Memphis.
