why doesn't Richard want to say goodbye to the other kids at the orphanage ?

Richard only says goodbye to the other children at the orphange because his mother demands he do so. He's so excited to be getting out that he doesn't want to delay for even a moment.

This is amply because he likes them. The kids are really the only ones that Richard says goodbye to.
