Why do the brothers want to leave home?

Antonio's brothers return from war and cannot settle back into village life. They return from the war as men and forever changed by what they experienced. They have new dreams and aspirations now. Gene points out that,

"We can't build our lives on their dreams. We're men, Andy, we're not boys any longer. We can't be tied down to old dreams."
