What is the conflict that Pecola has with her self and explain how the conflict contributes to the meaning of the work?
Pecola is twelve years old. Her family lives in a converted storefront. She is considered ugly, and is emotionally and socially awkward. She prays for blue eyes, because she knows from images in movies and on candy wrappers that to have blue eyes is to be loved. This speaks to the theme of beauty in a world dominated by white culture and oppressed minorities. Pecola, like any girl, wants to be beautiful and accepted.
