How was the colonial life different in the fringe areas vs. the cities or area where silver and gold mines or sugar plantations were established?

I’m not too familiar with this book. Slavery was more prevalent in areas demanding intensive labor. These areas were often places of misery and violence for the indigenous people forced into bondage. Fringe areas with less population had less colonial impact.
