Linda is not happy in her life at the reservation. She misses Soma, living in a clean environment..... she misses civilization. Linda's relationship with the other women on the reservation isn't great, as she alienated a number of them by having sex with their husbands. Her relationship with John isn't quite as simple. She tried to encourage civility, but John preferred to psend time with the Indians..... he wanted to be one of them. John was also put off by his mother's promiscuity and the men she brought into their lives.
