Is the only reason Lenina and the others seem happy because they’ve been brainwashed?

I think they have been conditioned to not think abstractly. Lenina and others don't know how to be critical of their own emotions. They lack the skill to question what happiness means. They also take a lot of Soma which numbs the brain.
