What is the significance of the closing scene in bnw?
John has taken to self-flagellation (whipping himself) to purge his impure thoughts. We must understand that at this point in the novel John Savage wants nothing to do with the new world. He finds id devoid of truth and built on the illusion of pleasure with no consequences. The press sees this and people flock to witness the spectacle. Among them is Lenin who he has been having naughty thoughts about. The significance of the closing seen is that John has woken with the stupor of Soma about his brain. He realises that he has had meaningless sex with Lenina; he has become what he most loathes. John kills himself in the end. John is one of the few characters with a strict moral code. The irony of his last name (savage) is most apparent now. He tried to resist the world of illusion and disposable emotion but could not. In the world State no one grows old or experiences remorse and loss; the image of John hanging, dead by his own hand, makes us experience all of this more intensely.
