What does the narrator suggest is the source of Bernard's self-consciousness and dissatisfaction with society?

Bernard's differences are the source of his dissatisfaction with society. He wishes to act as an individual, to be different, because he recognizes that he is different. Initially, we're impressed by his actions, but it doesn't take long for us to see that his pride will be his downfall, and that his actual concerns are found in having the ability to brag about his differences, to place himself on a pedestal. Bernard's so-called integrity is in actuality superficial. His character is disappointing.
