In Chapter 17, we have a disagreement between John and Mond. Mond believes in the Christian virtues )kindness, patience, long-suffering). John, of course, rejects these believing that life must have suffering and danger in order to be worthwhile. John believes that religion, beauty, and freedom are found in discomfort and pain. So for him, virtue is found in the ability to be unhappy.
Brave New World
John Savage has old ideas of virtue. He sees responsibility, fidelity, "love" and emotion as part of a relationship. This is partly why he is such a novelty to the people in the book. John fights to keep his beliefs being thrown into the vapid world of the novel.
