Why are the babies being conditioned to hate books and flowers?

Lower caste citizens in this society are conditioned to hate flowers because there is little consumerism involved in the act of stopping to smell the roses. Books have the ability to educate and change people. The State does not want lower caste citizens thinking for themselves or developing ideas that might disturb the social structure of society.
