Deighton is considered somewhat lazy for an immigrant from the West Indies. He has plans to make money but never applies himself to achieve his goals. Instead he prefers relaxing and basking in the sun. Silla on the other hand is driven to achieve the "American Dream". She works two jobs and hardly has a moment to relax. The contrasting personalities obviously cause stress in their marriage.
