From a thematic perspective Thornton is the better master. Judge Miller treated Buck like a pet. Buck's destiny was not to become fat and lazy on some comfy ranch in California. THe judge, though good intentioned, emasculated Buck. Thornton treated Buck the way he was meant to be treated. Buck worked hard for him and in return, Thornton respected his wild dogyness (I know that isn't a word).
