Did the dogs prefer breaking their own trial or running on a trial that had already been packed?

The dogs preferred running on a trail that had already been packed. Breaking the runners from a firm grip in the snow required immense strength and tenacity. It was simply easier to take a trail which had already been broken. (Page 68)
