They were "greenhorns" - they overloaded the sled, they did not feed the dogs properly, and they did not take advice from the experienced travelers around them.
Hal and Charlie were mean to their dogs. Although Francois and Perrault worked their dogs hard, they let them rest and fed them. They did not beat or curse them. They recognized dog psychology. Hal and Charles are not so mindful of their dogs. THey ambitions to find gold, but are also incompetent and lazy. THey are out of place in the harsh environment. They have no understanding of the dogs, and mistreats them terribly.They put too much of a load on and they do not let them rest or eat properly.
