In the beginning of Chapter One, Buck is described as the king of his domain. He was the master. He was not a kennel dog, nor was he a house dog. Buck went where he pleased, sat where he pleased, and played with who he pleased. He was part Saint Bernard, part Scotch Shepard, and weighed about 140 pounds.
