The name of the cafe where John Thornton makes a bet over Buck's "power" in pulling a sled is called the Eldorado. This is the historical allusion to the mythical "city of gold" searched for by many famous explorers such as Sir Walter Raleigh. The reference is perfect since all of the men in the Yukon are hoping to find the mythical bonanza of gold that will ensure their richness for the rest of their lives. This is in the chapter "For the Love of a Man."
