Buck had to contend with some nasty men like Hal who just about killed him. Buck also had to contend with angry pack dogs like Spitz who also hurt him. Finally Buck could not make his final transformation to "king dog of the wild" if he wagged his tail all the time and licked everything he came in contact with.
