why did buck often leave thorntons fire and run off into the woods?

Buck ran off from the fire and safety of the camp to join in with the wild dogs(wolves). He's torn between the wild life he desires and the people he loves...... but he does run off and do his thing (leading as the alpha dog) with the pack.
