Why is it inevitable that they should run out of dog food and that some dogs would die on the trail?

Hal, Charles, and Mercedes are clueless about dogs and sledding through the North. They weigh their sled down with too many things; they push their dogs way too hard ; they are cruel to their dogs (whipping them at times). It is inevitable that both the dogs and these people will meet a bad ending.
