The title is appropriate because it alludes to the type of feminine desire most familiar to William's readers at the time. "Cat on a hot tin roof" refers to a fantasy of femininity; Maggie is the cat. She is dissatisfied with her life and submissive to her man. She's lonely, desirous of attention (sexual and emotional), nervous, and a bit bitchy. Her character is never quite sure she can keep her footing..... like a cat on a hot, tin roof.
