Cathedral

Over the course of the evening, Robert teaches the narrator to see this transcendent reality. Robert senses a depth in reality that leaves the narrator uncrtain and confused. The narrator realizes that he does enjoy Robert's company, and then feels compelled to explore the limits of Robert's sight. When the narrator realizes that he is unable to describe a cathedral to Robert, he becomes cynical, but in the end, he is unable to retreat to his detached persona so easily. With his eyes closed, not at all focused on what he has been drawing but rather on something he can't comprehend, the narrator feels free – "I was in my house. I knew that. But I didn't feel like I was inside anything." The narrator is no longer is trapped and isolated in his own body and situation, but rather part of a greater existence.
