the blind man is an old friend of narrator's wife. why then does he focus on the narrator? in what way is the narrator's spiritual development the blind man's gift to the narrator's wife?
Carver focuses on the narrator's character because he would likely be described as more blind than the blind man. The narrator is detatched, uninterested, uninvolved, and most of all has no skills in oberservation. What he presumes to see is incorrect.... figments of the imagination.... his wife too familiar with another man.... the jealousy.... the need to medicate with drugs and alcohol. The narrator's spiritual development, a direct result of he and Robert's silent connection, enables him to see past his himself.... for his wife, this would be the ultimate gift.
