The narrator in The Cathedral is an unhappy, glib, and judgmental man who undergoes an epiphany through Robert's guidance. He is in a seemingly unhappy marriage, and spends most nights drinking and smoking marijuana. He has no friends. Though he shows little concern for others (outside judging them), he has a feeling of freedom in drawing the cathedral in the story's final scene.
