Why did the narrator's wife leave her first husband? What qualities in the narrator might have led his wife to marry him?

She left her husband because she was unhappy with him, so unhappy in fact, that she tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose of pills. Her second husband, I;m not sure how she feels about him, that a bit ambiguous, but he does seem to love and admore her. That might have done the trick.
