After the British ships invade the harbors, Madam Lockton becomes certain that the British will prevail. As a result, she orders the silver polished, she invites friends over, and she acts as if nothing has changed. In Chapter Twenty, she sends a plate of cookies and milk to Isabel, a treat that Isabel quickly eats before falling asleep. For that, Isabel says, she will never forgive herself.
