Anderson uses symbolism, metaphor, and poetic language to captivate the reader, and her use of dialogue in vernacular, which affects grammar, spelling, and syntax might make the text a bit more difficult to understand, but it also lends realism.... a distinct contrast between the slave world and the "white" world. This language (dialogue) is important because it adds depth and provides the reader with a glimpse into a historic world, which is made believable through the language of the characters.
