Dahl uses the novel to illustrate various themes..... greed, indulgence, consequences, and the fact that appearances can be deceiving. In the end, we come to understand that greed has consequences in all of its forms, and that the way things seem aren't always what we believe them to be. In the novel, greed affects different characters in different ways. Augustus' greed, for example, is gluttony.... he can't get enough, and thus, he gets stuck in the pipes.
Another theme that comes full circle is poor parenting, allowing children all they want, assisting them in the development of bad habits, and in turn, being a prime example of the problem.
