When does Adeline show the most independence and Courage throughout the whole book?

Adeline's first truly selfless act of independence comes when she stands against Niang and for Little Sister. This act of independence speaks loudly to Adeline's independent spirit and subsequently serves to isolate her as the troublemaker. Adeline's courage in standing up for her sister draws the wrath of her new step-mother and creates a chasm that will force Adeline to draw on that same courage in order to face the difficult future Niang repays her with.
