Aunt Baba is described as "meek, shy and unmarried," wholly dependent on her younger brother--Adeline's father--financially.

Adeline is independent.... at least she comes to be independent. As a child she is mistreated, though dependent upon her family. As she grows into a young woman, her desire for an education and accomplishments leave her in charge of her own destiny.
