The pastoral images of beauty and a life of eternal spring are debunked in the latter stanzas. The girl questions the promises the shepherd makes implying that they are empty and not realistic. Te girl knows that seasons change regardless of what the shepherd claims. With changing seasons comes dying flowers and “shallow rivers” that turn to “rage."
