Thoreau's brand of non-conformity would be far more difficult to pull of in today's modern society. If you don't pay your taxes, the IRS will be knocking on your door, and it is virtually impossible to get through life without the use of lawyers and lawmakers. Most of us cannot defend oursleves in a court of law, and we live in a world where people sue over EVERYTHING.
