what brought many outsiders to come to South Africa? how did the boers feel about this?

At the time of the book there were roughly 15 million people in SA. About 3 million were white Boers and the rest were primarily black with a large South Asian community. People came for a number of reasons. Much of South Africa's natural resources had not yet been exploited. There was a decided lack of business infrastructure that was developed and run by the South Asian community. The Boar's were very afraid that their identity and heritage would be swallowed up by the waves of immigration, primarily coloured people, into the country. They feared their monopolies on certain assets would be threatened as well.
