The rural/urban divide is linked to the overwhelming theme of inequality and poverty in South Africa. South Africans are allotted small amounts of land with poor soil that is difficult to farm. The city, on the other hand, is portrayed as dangerous. Sadly, the poor farming conditions leads rural dwellers to the city to find work.
Cry, the beloved country, for the unborn child that is the inheritor of our fear. Let him not love the earth too deeply. Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire.
