The white scarf signifies an officer which also makes them a target for the enemy. The Comte boasts that he took off his white scarf to blend in with the enemy. Cyrano thinks that only a coward would do that. Cyrano says he would have taken the white scarf from the Comte and worn it himself. The Comte scoffs at this and Cyrano produces the same scarf from his pocket.
