How was David treated at Salem house?

David was treated poorly by the school staff, who are friends of Mr. Murstone. Mr. Creakle, the headmaster, is a violent man, who enjoys bullying and terrorizing David. David does, however, make some friends. Tommy Traddles becomes a lifelong friend. James Steerforth also develops a long term relationship with David, and though their relationship wouldn't be considered healthy, he did afford David protection at school.
