In the chapter one at the openiop scene
In the first chapter, the reader gets the impression that Miss Betsey is a bit eccentric and most definitely controlling. When she initially appears, Clara (David's mother) is in childbirth. It is obvious that she was unhappy with Betsey's choice in a husband, who had recently passed away. She had also been married..... to a much younger man, who was very handsome and unfortuntely..... abusive. Thus, she wasn't overly trusting of men, and upon learning her niece had given birth to a boy..... quickly left the house. David's mother would never see her aunt again.
