It is widely agreed that Neil's father's refusal to allow his son to spread his wings was the main reason behind Neil's suicide. His father was staunch and had high expectations for his son. He also believed that what he thought were Neil's hobbies were frivolous, and thus, forbid him to write for the school magazine or act in school plays.
